Denver City Council deletes X account

The Denver City Council has deleted its account on X, formerly known as Twitter, blaming what it described as increased political rhetoric surrounding Elon Musk and his newly formed Department of Government Efficiency.

City Council President Amanda Sandoval confirmed the account was deleted on Feb. 21.

“As long as X is owned by Elon Musk, and he’s an appointee of the president, and he’s bidding on contracts for the federal government, as Council President, I have made the decision that we cannot have City Council be part of that,” Sandoval told The Denver Gazette.

When asked about how the deletion may affect residents who follow the council’s account, Sandoval said agendas are posted “in accordance with our laws and follow all rules related to our open meetings.”

Some councilmembers continue to use the platform actively, including Councilmembers Kevin Flynn and Shontel Lewis.

One of the city’s most active X users is Denver Mayor Mike Johnston. According to spokesperson Jordan Fuja, the mayor doesn’t have any plans to move away from X.

“We’re always evaluating our approach to make sure the Mayor is connecting with Denverites in the best way possible,” Fuja said in a statement to The Denver Gazette. “Our focus is to meet Denverites where they are, keep them informed about what’s happening in the city and foster productive conversations by constantly assessing the tools we use to ensure we engage with the community effectively.”
