Nearly 100 animals rescued from Custer County kennel

Nearly 100 animals were seized Monday from a “large commercial kennel” in southern Colorado, according to a news release from the Custer County Sheriff’s Office.
The Sheriff’s Office received a complaint Feb. 13 from a nearby resident about the facility, which led deputies to investigate and eventually take in 86 “at-risk” animals.
Two veterinarians and one veterinary technician found 77 dogs, two horses, one donkey, three hens and three cats in need of medical care. The animals were taken to several facilities, including the National Mill Dog Rescue in Peyton, for follow-up care.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the kennel operates under a “special use permit” issued by Custer County Government. Officials would not say where in the county the kennel is located.
No charges were filed as of Wednesday morning, according to a release from the Custer County Sheriff’s Office, but charges could be coming through the 11th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
