If you are looking for a memorable hiking experience in nature, look no further than Colorado Mountain Expeditions! The small, family-owned adventure company offers guided hiking and backpacking tours in Arizona, Colorado, and Utah. Exciting trails highlight the beauty of each area, shown through the eyes of knowledgeable guides. These men and women are passionate about sharing their love for nature and hiking.

Are you a seasoned backpacker, casual hiker or somewhere in-between? Whatever your skill level, there is an adventure with Colorado Mountain Expeditions for you! The company offers quality hiking experiences from conquering Longs Peak, Colorado’s 15th tallest mountain, to completing the 500-mile Colorado Trail. Colorado Mountain Expeditions has a wide variety of experiences for all hikers in Colorado, Arizona, and Utah.

Colorado Mountain Expeditions offers two types of adventures in Rocky Mountain National Park. Their backpacking trips take hikers right into the beautiful backcountry of one of the nation’s most visited national parks. CME handles all logistics, food, group equipment, and permits. CME offers two backpacking trips: a quick three-day/two-night trip that fits into any schedule and a second option that covers the entire Continental Divide Trail in RMNP.

The other trip style they offer in RMNP are base camp hiking experiences. CME sets up a comfy base camp and shuttles hikers to trailheads throughout the national park. This adventure is great for those looking to hike a wide variety of trails. There are daily options for advanced or easier hikes, with the group splitting up to take the adventure of their choice. Hikers can choose to summit Longs Peak on this trip or opt for more mellow trails if they’d like.

In Moab, Utah’s adventure town, Colorado Mountain Expeditions hosts basecamp hiking trips. April and October offer perfect weather for Moab Base Camp Hiking trips which include planned hikes in two of Utah’s most famous National Parks, along with a comfy base camp situated along the Colorado River. Hike under sandstone arches in Arches National Park and through canyons of Canyonlands National Park. You can count on stunning skies in this International Dark Sky Community!

On The Colorado Trail you can see the best, most remote parts of Colorado on its namesake trail, a 486-mile path that runs between Denver and Durango, Colo., on a progressive five-day hike. Colorado Mountain Expeditions’ trekking style trips offer a slack packing experience in which CME hauls all the heavy equipment while hikers only take a small daypack with their food, water, and rain gear. The Colorado Trail offers views of the land from the Rocky Mountains to forests, meadows, and abundant wildlife. Colorado Mountain Expeditions is the official hiking outfitter of The Colorado Trail Foundation.

On the Highline National Recreation Trail in Arizona. This National Recreation Trail intersects the Mogollon Rim, a 200-mile-long geological feature cutting across the northern half of Arizona. The area is characterized by its breathtaking views, dense forests of towering pines, and diverse wildlife, making it a serene escape for hikers and nature lovers alike. This is a slack-packing trek with hikers completing the entire 54.7-mile Highline National Recreation Trail during the 5-day hiking trip.

Part “getting back to basics,” part extraordinary experience

Hikers only need to bring a tent, sleeping bag or pad (which can also be rented), personal clothes, rain gear, broken-in hiking boots and a daypack. CME handles all trip coordination, from reservations to transportation, meals, and snacks.

Colorado Mountain Expeditions provides a community tent that serves as a dining room/living room with a coffee station and cooler filled with refreshments, camp chairs, plates, utensils and mugs, in-camp shower (where regulations allow), and a community latrine. Hot breakfasts and dinners are served, and trail lunches are made from a wide selection of fresh, healthy food; CME offers options for a variety of dietary restrictions including vegetarian or gluten-free diets.

Connect with nature – and your fellow travelers

Hikes start early in the morning, to make the most of spectacular scenery with beautiful mountain views. A lead guide and a sweep guide bookend hiking groups between12-14 people, providing insights into flora, fauna and history of areas covered.

After hiking there is time for rest, relaxation, and socialization, so books and card games are items that should be on your packing list!

Solo travelers make up a large part of CME’s clientele, particularly women in the 50- to 75-year age bracket. Couples, groups, and solo travelers all enjoy trips provided by CME. Everyone has one thing in common: a like-minded love of nature and hiking! As Diane Spicer said, “Hiking and happiness go hand in hand or foot in boot.”

Applause and accolades

It has been said that the best recommendations come by word of mouth. Colorado Mountain Expedition participants are spreading the most positive words via Google reviews. Some of the highlights include:

“It has been a pleasure to hike with CME. The guides and meals are wonderful,” said Kathleen Fauth. “I was supported in achieving my personal goals and appreciated the flexibility to hike my own hike. I highly recommend CME to anyone who wants to hike all or part of the Colorado Trail.”

“I had a wonderful time on our five-day hike,” said Jim Zasowski. “I hadn’t camped out in 40 years and had never really hiked more than a couple of miles, so I was a little anxious signing up for this … I followed the training schedule and – sure enough – I was well prepared. The group we had was terrific and the service provided was exceptional. Lots of fun making new friends and lots of fun hiking beautiful Colorado trails. I give this experience a 10+ and it was all thanks to CME’s organization and inspiration.”

“These guys are great! They handled the logistics, kept us on the trail, and safely got everyone back to camp. They fed us, provided showers, and shlepped our gear so we could use car camping equipment rather than backpacking equipment,” said Andrea Baker … “The hiking part was plenty challenging, and I highly recommend reading – and taking seriously – the trip descriptions and the recommendations regarding preparation and getting fit … They made everything else easy, and this was a thoroughly enjoyable trip. I am looking forward to the next one. Worth every penny.”

With all this positive feedback, it’s no surprise that Colorado Mountain Expeditions was a 2024 finalist as an outfitter guide company by Best and Grand.
