The 4th Infantry Division’s 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team will deploy to the border with Mexico to assist the Department of Homeland Security and Customs and Border Protection’s ongoing efforts to “maintain security.”

The move will see roughly 2,400 soldiers deploy, though specific locations are not being named, per a news release from the United States Northern Command (NORTHCOM). The move follows previous deployments of active duty troops to the southern border, which in early February was reported to be about 3,600 total.

With the latest deployment, the total number of active troops deployed to the border totals about 10,000.

“Tasks carried out by 2nd SBCT will include detection and monitoring; administrative support; transportation support; warehousing and logistic support; vehicle maintenance; and engineering support,” a press release said. “The 2nd SBCT provides unique military capabilities to protect and maintain the sovereignty and territorial integrity and security of the southern border, a top priority of the Department of Defense.”

The deployment will see Strykers, a light armored vehicle designed to give infantry troops armor protection without deploying full fledged battle tanks, sent to the border. This is the first time since 2012 Strykers have been deployed south, according to the news release.

President Donald Trump campaigned on securing the southern border and vowed to take a more aggressive stance in halting illegal immigration compared to the Biden administration.

In Colorado, Denver and the surrounding metro area became a flashpoint in the immigration fight. The city saw over 43,000 immigrants bused in with roughly half electing to stay. Of the 20,000 Denver claims about 7,000 have been able to get work authorization through its program.

But the welcoming stance of the city prompted sharp criticism from Republicans in Washington, namely Rep. Lauren Boebert.

Some of Trump’s harder stance was felt in Aurora weeks ago when a contingent of ICE officers raided several properties across Aurora — ostensibly part of Trump’s “Operation: Aurora” — arresting one person. Immigration officials were targeting roughly 100 members of the Venezuelan prison gang Tren de Aragua.

In his first month in office, Trump deported close to 38,000 people — less than the Biden administration’s monthly average of 57,000, according to Reuters. But this number is poised to rise, officials with the Trump administration said.

The latest deployment of troops from Fort Carson will enhance detection and monitoring capabilities of partner agencies, according to NORTHCOM. In addition, troops will provide logistics support, maintenance, warehousing and administrative support.

They will not be involved in interdiction or deportation operations, NORTHCOM said.

“These deployments will bring additional agility and capability to further efforts to stop the flow of illegal migrancy and drugs at the southern border,” said Gen. Gregory Guillot, Commander, United States Northern Command.
