Man shot by Larimer County Sheriff’s Office deputy after commandeering patrol vehicle
A man was shot and injured by a deputy in Larimer County early Monday morning, the sheriff’s office said, as reported by Denver Gazette news partner 9News.
At about 2:45 a.m., the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office made a traffic stop near Prospect Road and Riverside Avenue in Fort Collins.
During the stop, the female driver got out of the car and followed commands from the deputies, the sheriff’s office said. According to the sheriff’s office, a man who was a passenger in the vehicle got into the driver’s seat of the car and drove away.
Deputies followed the car for several miles before the driver crashed into a ditch in the 2600 block of Terry Lake Road, the sheriff’s office said in a release.
The man got out of the vehicle and approached deputies with a knife, the sheriff’s office said. The man then got into an unoccupied patrol cruiser and began driving around deputies who were nearby on foot, according to the sheriff’s office.
One deputy fired his weapon, hitting the man, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies got the man out of the cruiser and provided first aid, the sheriff’s office said. The man was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
The Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) is on scene to investigate the shooting, according to the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office.
Colorado Highway 1 is closed between Gregory and Country Club roads, the sheriff’s office posted on the social platform X. The sheriff’s office first posted about the shooting at about 5:19 a.m. Monday.
Drivers should avoid the area while crews process the scene.
