Colorado women advance past Houston 66-58 in Big 12 tournament

Colorado’s women’s basketball team isn’t done yet.

The ninth-seeded Buffs beat the 16th-seeded Houston Cougars 66-58 in the first round of the Big 12 tournament at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo., Wednesday.

Colorado moved on to face No. 8 Arizona at 12:30 p.m. Thursday (ESPN+).

“Survive and advance,” Colorado’s Jade Masogayo said after on the ESPN broadcast.

Wednesday marked Colorado’s first appearance in the Big 12 tournament since 2011. It was also the Buffs’ first tournament win as a No. 9 seed.

Masogayo scored 14 points for the Buffs (19-11), who opened a 13-point lead on a Lior Garzon 3-pointer in the third quarter. Garzon had a game-high 21 points with three 3-pointers.

Colorado completed a two-game sweep of the Cougars, who lost 13 straight to close the season.

Houston (5-25) cut an 18-point lead to 10 with Leilani Augmon’s jumper with 5:23 left in regulation. The Cougars then cut it to a seven-point deficit after a series of careless Buffaloes turnovers.

CU finished with an astounding 33 turnovers but limited Houston to 30.4% shooting.

“We’ve got some stuff to clean up for sure,” Masogayo said.

The Buffs out-rebounded the Cougars 48-22 and had seven blocks to Houston’s one.

Colorado has had success against Arizona (19-12), the opponent Thursday. The Buffs beat the Wildcats 56-47 at CU Events Center on Feb. 5. Masogayo led the way with 19 points.
