The Denver Police Department arrested a man in connection to a fatal shooting that occurred Thursday afternoon.
Officers responded to a shooting in an alley to the west of the 2600 block of North Zuni Street — in the Highland Park neighborhood — around 12:30 p.m. Thursday on reports of a shooting. One victim was located with an unknown extent of injuries at the time, according to social media posts by the department.
Upon arrival, officers pursued a possible suspect in a vehicle, later identified as 24-year-old Rafael Acosta-Hernandez, near North Federal Boulevard and west 26th Avenue. The pursuit eventually ended near west 20th Avenue and the suspect fled the vehicle. Officers then set up a perimeter as they attempted to find the suspect and prevent his escape.
The victim was taken to a nearby hospital where he or she later died from their injuries around 7 p.m., according to a subsequent social media post.
Acosta-Hernandez was eventually arrested and is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder, police said.
Preliminary investigations found that there was an argument between the victim and suspect that escalated to the shooting, police said. Investigators found that there may have been a conflict involving the suspect and victim the week prior.
The investigation is ongoing.
The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner will release the victim’s identification following investigations.
