Broncos re-sign Jarrett Stidham to two-year, $12 million deal as backup to Bo Nix; Mitch Fraboni to return

Jarrett Stidham had sought to return to the Broncos as the backup to Bo Nix. And that will happen.

The impending free-agent quarterback agreed Sunday to a two-year, $12 million contract extension with $7 million guaranteed, sources said. He will continue to work with Nix, who beat out Stidham for the job last summer as a rookie and started all 17 games.

The move was expected. When asked by The Denver Gazette on Jan. 8 if he hoped to re-sign with the Broncos, Stidham said, “Yeah, sure.” And things after that continued to trend toward Stidham returning

Sources said Sunday the Broncos also have agreed to re-sign long snapper Mitch Fraboni, who was in line to become a restricted free agent Wednesday, to a three-year $4.175 million contract. The Broncos had not planned to tender Fraboni at the lowest amount of $3.263 million for 2025, which meant he would have been in line to become an unrestricted free agent Wednesday had he not agreed to the deal.

NFL teams are permitted to re-sign their own free agents in advance of Monday’s start of the NFL negotiating period. Free agents from other teams can begin to sign deals on Wednesday’s first day of the NFL new league year.

Stidham, entering his seventh season and third with Denver, started the final two games for Denver in 2023 when Russell Wilson was benched and eventually released. He was active for all 17 games last season and got into three without throwing a pass.

The third-string quarterback in 2024 was Zach Wilson, who wasn’t active for any games. Wilson is expected to test the market when he becomes an unrestricted free agent Wednesday.

Stidham, who had signed a two-year, $10 million deal with the Broncos in March 2023, told The Denver Gazette on Jan. 8 that he’s “really enjoyed my time” in Denver. On that day, Nix told reporters how much Stidham has been able to help him in the quarterback room.

“It’s good,’’ Nix said. “He’s been great to have all year. He’s taught me a lot about not only our scheme, but preparation and going against other teams.”

The Broncos are continuing to negotiate with nose tackle D.J. Jones, 30 who would become an unrestricted free agent Wednesday if he doesn’t agree to a deal. Jones, who made $9.49 million last season, might have to take a pay cut for 2025 and he touched upon that possibility Sunday on social media.

“If you don’t know your own value, somebody will tell you your value, and it’ll be less than you’re worth,” Jones wrote.

When a fan wrote it sounds as if Jones won’t return to Denver, he wrote back, “Not necessarily my dawg, just waiting like everybody else.”
