Scott Wedgewood makes ‘acrobatic’ kick save in Avalanche shutout win over Blackhawks
Avalanche goaltender Scott Wedgewood made several highlight reel saves Monday night in a shutout victory over the Blackhawks.
The crowd at Ball Arena chanted a rendition of his last name — “WEDGIE! WEDGIE! WEDGIE!” — as Colorado won its sixth consecutive game, 3-0, against a bottom-feeding divisional opponent. The Avs scored three times in the third period while Nathan MacKinnon eclipsed 1,000 career points with two assists.
But Wedgewood stole the show in Colorado’s sixth consecutive victory.
His marquee save took place with under eight minutes left in the first period.
Blackhawks forward Connor Bedard entered the zone on a breakout with Cale Makar sprawling on the ice to prevent a shot attempt. Bedard briefly lost control of the puck, regained possession in the slot, and shot the puck through traffic. Wedgewood was hardly in position for a save.
A net-front collision with Blackhawks forward Colton Dach left Wedgewood on his back. He didn’t flinch. The backup Avalanche goaltender lifted his left skate and kicked the puck out of the air.
“I got on my back, saw Bedard shooting. I went a little old school and got a little piece of it,” Wedgewood said in the postgame locker room. “The ref came over and said, obviously, if that would of went in, it would have been no goal (due to goaltender interference). … That was probably one of the more acrobatic ones I’d say, for sure.”
Wedgewood kept it rolling in the second period.
Blackhawks forward Nick Foligno’s sweeping backhand shot nearly succeeded as Wedgewood’s momentum took him away from the net. But he made a sprawling left-to-right glove save that kept the game scoreless heading into the third. That’s when the home crowd showed their appreciation with the unique — “WEDGIE!” — chant.
“The one in the second might have been a better save. Just staying with it and double extension to keep that one off the goal line,” Wedgewood said. “It’s just fun to hear, obviously, when they get behind you like that.”
Wedgewood, 32, has fulfilled expectations since joining the team via trade (Predators) in December. He entered Monday night with a .916 save percentage in Colorado. Wedgewood is providing quality depth goaltending as the NHL postseason nears. He made impressive saves Monday in the final period, too.
“His first handful of games, he looked like a season veteran starter, like he was unbeatable,” coach Jared Bednar said. “He gets all those big wins when we needed him most trying to dig out of a hole. Then I would say he played some games that were just so-so for a while. But coming out of the break here, he’s been fantastic, and that’s what we need. … It gives you a better opportunity to win on nights like this when you’re not perfect with the puck.”
