Breaking out: Denver set to host national breakdancing competition

Denver is quickly spinning its way to a breakdancing capitol.

Just eight months after Red Bull held their regional BC One breakdancing competition at Denver’s Temple Nightclub, the company has announced that its BC One Camp USA and National Cypher will take place at McGregor Square from May 16-18.

“Many people don’t know the rich breaking history that Colorado has,” dancer B-boy Ivan, artistic director of On the Break Dance Academy based in Colorado Springs, said in Red Bull’s Tuesday news release. “Many of the top breakers in the country have trained in studios based here, and many dancers from this state have competed all over the world. For the Red Bull BC One National Cypher to come to Denver means we’re finally getting the flowers for our contributions to the break scene.”

The National Cypher will feature 16 b-boys and 16 b-girls (the preferred title for break dancers) showing off their best gravity defying moves. The dancers will have moved on from the regional competitions in Minneapolis and New York City the months prior.

The winners will then compete for the national championship title and the chance to represent the U.S. at Red Bull BC One World Final in Tokyo on Nov. 9.

While Denver has hosted regional legs of the yearly competition — including dancers from Denver, Minneapolis and Detroit — it has never hosted the national finals.

In 2023, the National Cypher was held in Philadelphia. It was held in Venice Beach, Calif., in 2024.

The Red Bull BC One Camp USA will take place before the competition May 16-17, providing a free two-day “immersive experience” for breakers and fans alike, according to the release. These events will feature various dance workshops and exhibition battles held at Beta Event Center.

The weekend will culminate May 18 with the national competition, featuring breakers from across the country.

Breaking spiked in the country in the 1980s and 1990s with the rise in hip-hop, before falling out of popular culture in the early 2000s.

But, breakers from the Denver region say it never left, according to Jacob “Data” Flesher, who competed at the regional event last September.

“If you were in Colorado, you were seeing breaking happening at raves,” Flesher said of growing up in Colorado. Flesher fell in love with the craft through the raves, eventually getting his start in Colorado Springs.

“A lot of it is through underground events and events like Red Bull BC One. These type of events have made it more accessible for people to get into breaking,” Nancy “Asia One” Yu, a legendary breaker from Colorado, told The Denver Gazette in September. “There are also a lot of underground events that happen in cities, like Denver, where a crew will hold their own event and people will come from outside of the city.”

Now the whole breakdancing community will have its eyes on the Mile High City.

“For over 20 years, the ultimate title in international breaking has always been the Red Bull BC One world champion. I can’t wait to see how the next generation steps up to the challenge this year,” two-time Red Bull BC One world champion and bronze medalist Victor Montalvo said in the release.

Tickets are available for pre-sale purchase at redbullbconeusa.eventbrite.com for $10. Prices will increase in late April.
