Skier dead after reportedly losing control while traveling at high rate of speed in Colorado

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a skier death that was reported on the afternoon of March 11 at Colorado’s Keystone Resort.

Personnel responded at about 4 p.m. to the report of the fatality, with the initial investigation revealing that a male skier from the Front Range was traveling down Haywood trail at a high rate of speed when he lost control. Haywood trail is an intermediate-rated trail near the resort’s Mountain House base area.

After losing control, the skier veered off of the trail and collided with a padded light pole. Life-saving efforts were attempted by ski patrol at the scene, after which he was transported to the Keystone Medical Center and pronounced deceased.

According to law enforcement, there is currently no evidence of foul play or intoxication. It’s also worth noting that the skier was reported to be wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. He appears to have been the only person involved in the accident.

Condolences go out to those impacted by the death of this skier.

Identifying information, including age and hometown of the skier, have not been released at this time. The skier’s official cause of death is still to be determined.
