Hanging Lake Trail set to reopen after restoration work

One of Colorado’s most iconic trails is set to reopen this summer — and it will look a little different.

The hike-by-reservation Hanging Lake Trail was closed last year for construction aimed at fortifying the path damaged by water and debris in the wake of the 2020 Grizzly Creek fire.

While construction continues, keeping the trail closed, online reservations are scheduled to open at 8 a.m. Monday in advance of the trail’s expected debut at the start of July.

“After months of restoration, this iconic Glenwood Springs hike is ready to welcome visitors back,” read a social media post by the city that manages reservations. “If you’ve been waiting for your chance to see its crystal-clear waters and stunning waterfalls, now’s the time to start planning.”

For those returning to Hanging Lake Trail, changes would feel subtle, Eagle-Holy Cross District Ranger Leanne Veldhuis previously told The Gazette.

She said the trail would maintain its length (about 1.2 miles) and steep, rocky trend gaining 1,200 feet. It has been slightly realigned in places, Veldhuis said: “Either bumping the trail tread a little bit farther away or higher above the creek, so in the case of future spring flooding, the trail will still be there and not be under water.”

Construction included “high-level, master stone work,” she said. The $4.5 million job also called for replacing seven foot bridges and a new boardwalk at the destination Spouting Rock.

Hourly timed entry permits will be posted online, with three-hour hiking windows. Permits are $12 per person.
