In a continued effort to curb auto thefts, the Denver Police Department has partnered with the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority to provide 450 free tracking devices to residents.

The police department is offering the 450 free AirTags and SmartTag Bluetooth location tracking devices to residents who register through the city’s DenverTrack auto theft prevention program, according to a DPD news release Monday.

DenverTrack, which was created in 2023, has contributed to a reduction in auto thefts, according to the police department. So far in 2025, reported auto thefts are down 33% compared to the same time frame in 2024, officials said.

Starting at 2 p.m. Tuesday, residents may register for a time slot for an in-person DenverTrack registration and a tracker giveaway event through the Denver police auto theft prevention webpage under the “DenverTrack Registration Events” tab, city officials said.

The in-person DenverTrack registration and Bluetooth tracker giveaway events are planned at each of DPD’s six district stations between Wednesday and Friday from 6 to 8 p.m., according to the police department.

Those receiving tracking devices must provide vehicle registration and bring a phone to connect to the tracker. A DenverTrack decal is also mailed after registration and “should be placed on the vehicle’s driver side window as a deterrent, advertising to thieves that the car will be tracked if it’s stolen,” city officials said on the website.

DPD isn’t allowed to track Bluetooth devices unless requested by the vehicle owner. If a vehicle with DenverTrack is stolen, then the owner can contact the police department to track down the vehicle.

The DenverTrack team consists of auto theft investigators and a network of license plate readers.
