Strong winds and snow combined created hazardous conditions on the eastern plains, resulting in multiple road closures Wednesday morning.
According to the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) as of 7 a.m., the following highways are closed due to adverse weather conditions:
- I-70 eastbound from Airpark Road to Burlington.
- I-70 westbound from Burlington – Deer Trial
- US-385 both directions from Burlington to Sheridan Lake
- US-40/287 both directions from Limon to Kansas State Line
- US-24 in both directions from mile point 316 to mile point 377, Colorado Springs to Limon
- CO-94 both directions from mile point 17 to mile point 35, Ellicott to Rush
- CO-86 both directions from Elizabeth to I-70 (Limon)
- CO-59 both directions from Seibert to Kit Carson
- CO-71 both directions from Limon to Last Chance
In addition to low visibility, winds exceeding 50 mph and gusting to over 60 mph are likely to impact travel for high-profile, light, and empty vehicles, CDOT said. Commercial transport, RVs/Campers, and trailers traveling on east/west routes should use extreme caution. It’s possible restrictions could be put in place for those vehicles.
Blizzard warnings extend into Kansas and Nebraska as well and central plains travelers should plan accordingly.
Travel is also being impacted along Interstate 25 in southern Colorado between Pueblo and Trinidad. CDOT said there is a restriction in place in that area for high-profile vehicles due to the wind.
Before heading out, check CDOT for the latest weather and travel conditions.
