As of 3:44 p.m., Aurora Fire reported a brush fire in the Jewell Wetlands Park was fully contained. No evacuations were required for the roughly football field sized fire.
Twenty-five “fire units” were assigned to the fire from Aurora and South Metro Fire Rescue sent “mutual aide” according to a post on X by Aurora Fire Rescue.
The fire started amid dry and windy conditions, though no red flag warning had been issued by the National Weather Service in Boulder when the fire sparked. The service has issued a red flag warning for Saturday, staring at 12 p.m. and expiring at 8 p.m.
Despite issuing no evacuations, Aurora Fire Rescue advised residents to remain indoors due to lingering heavy smoke.
The Denver Gazette’s original reporting is below:
Fire departments and local hospitals are responding to a wind-whipped brush fire in south Aurora Friday afternoon.
The fire is located at Jewell Wetlands Park near the intersection of East Jewell Avenue and South Potomac Street — west of Interstate 225 — in Aurora and looks to be about four acres and spreading, according to a reporter on the ground at the fire.
As of 3 p.m., there are seven ladder trucks, two fire rescue trucks, two ambulances and three miscellaneous response vehicles at the park to fight the fire.
Aurora Fire Rescue confirmed the fire at the park, but has not provided more details.
It’s the second fire this week at the park, with the first occurring on Monday around 3:30 p.m., according to the department. Fire was moving through the trees, leading to a two-acre fire before being extinguished around 4 p.m.
The cause of Monday’s fire is still under investigation.
While Aurora and the Denver metro were not under a red flag warning by the National Weather Service Boulder Friday afternoon, conditions are both dry and windy, with gusts expected to reach into 25 mph.
The area is under a red flag warning Saturday afternoon, though, with the arid and breezy conditions expected to last until 8 p.m. Saturday evening.
