Denver may buy electric vehicles for airport maintenance

The maintenance staff at Denver International Airport may soon get new vehicles if the Denver City Council approves a $1.4 million resolution authorizing the purchase of 21 electric vehicles from Daniels Long Automotive, LLC.

The 18 Chevrolet Silverados and three Chevrolet Blazers will replace obsolete vehicles in DIA’s maintenance division fleet.

City Council members will also consider a resolution authorizing and approving a $40,000 liability claim involving the Denver Police Department.

The settlement, resulting from a June 3, 2021 car accident involving Denver police officer Derek Martinez, will be payable to the Wilhite Law Firm and Brittney Matuzek.

Two proclamations will be issued.

The first will honor the life and service of Susan G. Berndine, who was deputy director of the Denver Police Crime Lab for a period.

A second proclamation will honor the March 31 holiday of César Chávez Day. Most city agencies will be closed for the holiday. Others may have impacted hours.

No required public hearings are scheduled.

Other items of interest at the meeting will include the council’s final consideration of bills designating the second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples Day for the City and County of Denver and amending the city code to increase the city’s emergency telephone charge.

Although sponsors of the council’s Indigenous Peoples’ Day bill acknowledge that compensating employees for the holiday could cost more than $5 million, District 11 Councilmember Stacie Gilmore called it a “soft cost” because the city had budgeted for the day as a work day.

However, the city would have to provide $1.3 million in overtime pay for those who would be required to work on the new holiday.

Council Bill 25-0260 would roughly double the fee for 911 emergency services, with public safety officials arguing it’s necessary to keep operations afloat and meet response time requirements.

The proposed fee hike — from $1.20 to $2.12 per month —  would apply to all residents who have a phone, whether landline or mobile, registered in the city.

The Denver City Council will hold its regular Monday meeting at 3:30 p.m., with the general public comment session beginning at 5 p.m.
