Denver Broncos free agency: 5 things to know about WR Trent Sherfield
The Denver Gazette examines each new roster addition to the Broncos through free agency with five things to know about wide receiver Trent Sherfield:
1. Former quarterback
Sherfield was a two-way football star at Danville (Ill.) High School in the early 2010s. He registered 4,970 yards and 64 touchdowns at quarterback over his final two seasons. He also started three years at defensive back with 146 tackles and six interceptions. Sherfield received scholarship offers from Illinois, Indiana, Penn State and others. But the three-star prospect (via 247 Sports) chose Vanderbilt. Sherfield transitioned to playing wide receiver in college.
2. SEC play
Sherfield played four seasons under Vanderbilt coach Derek Mason. It was mostly a struggle with no winning seasons and one bowl appearance. But Sherfield set the school’s single-game receiving yardage record (240 vs. Austin Peay in 2015) as a sophomore. He was voted an offensive team captain as a senior. Sherfield graduated in 2018 with a degree in medicine, health and society. Mason told the school’s website: “(Sherfield) trusted our coaching staff and turned into a dependable, talented receiver for this program.”
3. Special teams
Sherfield, 29, has now played for six NFL clubs since going undrafted — the Cardinals, 49ers, Dolphins, Bills, Vikings and Broncos. He’s been a special teams ace at every stop with spurts on offense. Sherfield has at least one touchdown catch in each of the past four seasons. His best year was 2022 in Miami with 30 receptions for 417 and two touchdowns. Last year, he played 49% of Minnesota’s snaps on special teams.
4. Butt punt
Sherfield was involved in one of the stranger NFL plays in recent memory. Remember the so-called butt punt? In 2022, the Dolphins’ Thomas Morstead was deep in his own end zone to punt against the Bills. His attempt, unfortunately, bounced off the rear-end of Sherfield in protection and it went out of bounds for a safety. The Dolphins still won the game, and Sherfield joked later on social media: “My cheeks have a big W tatted on them.”
5. Denver fit
It makes sense Sherfield landed in Denver on a two-year contract. Ex-Broncos special teams gunner Tremon Smith signed a two-year deal with the Texans. The Broncos also lost wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey in free agency to the Giants. It’s possible that Sherfield could help fill both voids. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound wide receiver has the physical tools to be a valued blocker on offense. He’s also proven to be a top contributor on special teams. Sherfield gets another fresh start with the Broncos.
