Cherry Creek elementary school locked down after student brings gun

Mother faces misdemeanor child abuse and failure to safely secure a firearm charges

The Aurora Police Department responded to an elementary school Friday morning after a student brought a firearm to the building.

Officers were dispatched to Arrowhead Elementary School, 19100 E. Bates Ave., in the Cherry Creek School District Friday morning around 8:30 a.m. on reports that a student had arrived at the school with a firearm.

Other students found out the student had a gun in their backpack and alerted staff, police said following the lockdown.

The school was placed on a brief lockdown and eventually reopened around 9:30 a.m., according to a social media post by the police department.

Officers found the student and the small-caliber handgun in their backpack. The gun had six rounds in the magazine, but none in the chamber.

Police stressed that they do not believe there was any ill will or threat to any other students.

District security and Aurora police remained at the school to investigate Friday morning, but they’re not looking at charging the student, police said.

The mother of the student, 39-year-old Zoe Cherelle Cantrelle, was issued a summons for child abuse and failing to safely secure a firearm, both misdemeanors, according to police.
