Top 5 questions facing the Colorado Rockies | 2025 Rockies preview

The Colorado Rockies open the 2025 MLB season on Friday at the Tampa Bay Rays.

Here is a closer look at their Top 5 questions marks entering the year.

1. Can it get much worse?

The Rockies have six straight losing seasons and dropped 100-plus games in consecutive years. They last clinched a playoff berth in 2018. Ownership isn’t keeping pace with roster spending of the NL West frontrunner Dodgers or Padres. Translation: It’s hard to be a Rockies fan. But it can’t get any worse … right?

2. Are the young arms ready?

The Rockies have invested plenty of draft capital into their pitching staff. It might pay off in 2025. Right-hander Chase Dollander (No. 9 overall, 2023) will start in the minors but will inevitably be called into the rotation. Gabriel Hughes (No. 10 overall, 2022) is another name to watch after he recovered from Tommy John surgery.

3. Will the ‘Big 3’ keep getting better?

Three young Rockies — OF Brenton Doyle, INF Michael Toglia and INF Ezequiel Tovar — had breakout 2024 seasons. They represent the next wave of Colorado star players. But consistency is key. All three must prove they can stack quality seasons while also showcasing improvement for the Rockies to once again become relevant.

4. Will Kris Bryant revive his career?

This isn’t how Bryant expected his first three seasons in Colorado to go. The 2015 NL MVP with the Chicago Cubs has been unable to stay healthy in recent years. Bryant tells reporters he’s feeling much better in 2025 with a renewed outlook and focus to stay in the lineup. Let’s see if he can thrive as the team’s designated hitter.

5. Will Coors Field attendance remain strong?

You might not realize the Rockies are an NL West basement dweller based on their crowd size. Coors Field averaged 31,361 in attendance last season — No. 15 among all MLB teams — with the party deck often full. Give ownership credit for creating the best outdoor bar in LoDo. But it’s not because of the on-field product.
