Arapahoe County man sentenced to more than 190 years for murdering girlfriend
Roy Jones, 54, killed his girlfriend on May 30, 2024
A Sheridan man will spend the rest of his life in prison after shooting and killing his girlfriend last year.
Eighteenth Judicial District Court Judge Joshua Williford sentenced 54-year-old Roy Jones to 192 years in prison Monday for the murder of Angela Cordova, 52, on May 30, 2024, according to a press release by the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
Following a five-day trial, Jones was found guilty of second-degree murder and three habitual criminal sentence enhancers.
While second-degree murder convictions carry a maximum sentencing of 48 years, the three enhancers allowed Judge Williford to enhance the sentence to a staggering 192 years, according to the release.
Sheridan police responded to the home in the 3400 block of West Dill Road around 5 a.m. after Cordova’s son called 911 to report a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found Cordova unresponsive in her bed with a gunshot wound to her head, according to the media release.
The son was awakened to arguing and then a loud bang, according to the release. He then heard Jones leave the home in his truck.
Home surveillance video showed Jones leaving the house shortly after he murdered Cordova.
He was later found and arrested in Adams County on May 31 before being transferred to the Arapahoe County Jail.
“The couple had only been dating for about a year before Mr. Jones decided to murder Ms. Cordova in her own bed,” Chief Deputy District Attorney Jacob Kremin said in the release. “The evidence leaves no doubt as to who is responsible for this egregious crime. This defendant robbed a son and daughter of their mother and deserves to spend the rest of his life behind bars.”
Cordova was the mother to two children who were “absolutely the truest loves of her life,” according to her obituary.
“Loved and adored by both family and friends, she will always be remembered for her kind and huge heart and her infectious laugh,” the obituary read. “Her life will be honored by the life she lived and through the love and friendship she gave us all.
