Fort Collins police arrest juvenile suspect in fatal shooting at Foothills Mall

Police said the shooting, which left two dead, may be gang-related

Authorities arrested a juvenile boy after two people were shot and killed outside a Fort Collins mall Saturday, according to the Fort Collins Police Department.

At around 5 p.m., police responded to a shooting call at the Foothills Mall, 200 block of E. Foothills Parkway, where two people were shot on a sidewalk between the parking lot and building, according to a Fort Collins police news release Sunday morning.

Upon arrival, officers found the two victims, performed medical assistance, and transported them to the hospital, where the two later died of their injuries, the police said.

Meanwhile, inside the mall and neighboring movie theater, businesses suspended operations, and a shelter-in-place protocol was activated. According to police, businesses inside and neighboring the mall remained closed throughout the shooting incident and investigation.

Following an investigation, the police identified and arrested a juvenile boy allegedly connected to the shooting, who won’t be identified due to his age, the police said.

The police added they believe this shooting “may be a gang-associated crime.”

“Detectives worked through the night on this case and were able to make an arrest,” Assistant Chief Frank Barrett, who oversees the police department’s Criminal Investigations Division, said in Sunday’s release.

“Though events like this are rare in Fort Collins, our officers maintain a high standard of training to ensure they are prepared to keep our city safe, no matter the rarity,” Barrett said. “There is still much work to be done as we continue working on this case.”

The Foothills Mall shooting remains under investigation.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact Detective Matt Dean at 970-221-6580.

Anyone wishing to remain anonymous can call Larimer County Crime Stoppers at 970-221-6868.
