Greeley man sentenced to life in prison for killing woman
A Greeley man was sentenced to life in prison Wednesday after a jury found him guilty of killing a woman in November 2022.
Amos Alaniz, 24, was convicted of first-degree murder for shooting and killing Herminia Marquez, 21, on Nov. 28, 2022, according to a news release from the 19th Judicial District Attorney. He received the maximum life sentence without parole.
“She was a bright beautiful soul,” Marquez’s mom said during the sentencing hearing, according to the release. “The loss of her is a wound that will never heal.”
Upon responding to the shooting in Greeley’s 1100 block of 24th Street Lane, police found Marquez with an apparent gunshot wound. Marquez and Alaniz’s sister did not return a stolen vehicle Alaniz claimed was his, which led to him shooting her, the release says.
In July of last year, a jury also convicted Mary Alicia Garcia, 28, of first-degree murder for her role in the incident. Garcia was driving a getaway vehicle when Alaniz shot and killed Marquez, and is currently serving a life sentence.
