Denver Pioneers hire Tim Bergstraser as men’s basketball coach
The University of Denver men’s basketball program’s long, winding and usually disastrous road to relevancy took another turn Monday.
Denver hired 33-year-old Tim Bergstraser as its 34th coach. Bergstraser went 75-22 across three seasons as the head coach at Minnesota State Moorhead, an NCAA Division II program.
Bergstraser replaces Jeff Wulbrun, who was fired with a 53-74 record in three-plus seasons coaching the Pioneers. DU athletics director Josh Berlo had placed Wulbrun on administrative leave while the players still had two regular-season games and with the Summit League tournament remaining.
Several players, including Summit League Freshman of the Year Sebastian Akins, have entered the NCAA transfer portal since season’s end.
Bergstraser played his college ball at St. Cloud State, which he helped to the Division II Final Four in 2010. The Minnesota native also worked on staffs at St. Cloud State, Wisconsin-River Falls and Quincy University before coaching Minnesota State Moorhead to three NCAA Division II tournaments.
The Pioneers are on their third coach since 2021 and haven’t produced a winning record since 2017.
