Denver Broncos draft preview: 5 potential running back targets

Ashton Jeanty, Omarion Hampton and TreVeyon Henderson top list

The Broncos are nearing the NFL draft on April 24-26 with roster needs at several positions.

The team currently holds seven picks: No. 20 (1st), No. 51 (2nd), No. 85 (3rd), No. 122 (4th), No. 191 (6th), No. 197 (6th) and No. 208 (6th).

The Denver Gazette takes an inside look at five potential running back targets:

1. Ashton Jeanty

School: Boise State

Size: 5-foot-9, 211 pounds

Career stats: 750 carries for 4,769 yards/50 rushing touchdowns and 80 catches for 862 yards/six receiving touchdowns.

Draft projection: First round

Bottom line: Jeanty is the prize of a deep and talented running back class. He finished just shy of breaking Barry Sanders’ single-season rushing record as a senior with 2,601 yards on the ground. His elite skillset is shedding defenders and bursting into open space. Jeanty is a patient runner and proven pass-catcher. He might not be available at No. 20 when Denver is on the clock.

2. Omarion Hampton

School: North Carolina

Size: 6-0, 221

Career stats: 622 carries for 3,565 yards/36 rushing touchdowns and 73 catches for 635 yards/four receiving touchdowns.

Draft projection: First round

Bottom line: Hampton touts a rare blend of physicality and speed. He’s got enough wiggle to squeeze through tight spaces and enough power to mow over any defender in his path. Hampton has the size and tools to develop into an excellent pass blocker. But the previous running back drafted from UNC — Javonte Williams (second round, 2021) — never panned out in Denver.

3. TreVeyon Henderson

School: Ohio State

Size: 5-10, 202

Career stats: 590 carries for 3,761 yards/42 rushing touchdowns and 77 catches for 853 yards/six receiving touchdowns.

Draft projection: Second round

Bottom line: Who doesn’t love a champion? Henderson is fresh of a national title with the Buckeyes. He’s arguably the best pass-protection running back in his class with exceptional ball-security and pass-catching history. He might lack the size and flashiness of other players on this list. But Henderson feels like an instant-impact rookie where he lands.

4. Cam Skattebo

School: Arizona State

Size: 5-10, 219

Career stats: 457 carries for 2,494 yards/30 rushing touchdowns and 69 receptions for 891 yards/four receiving touchdowns (not including FCS stats).

Draft projection: Fourth round

Bottom line: Few players in college football last season were more electric. He was the only player to record 1,000-plus yards rushing and 400-plus yards receiving. The Sacramento State (FCS) transfer is nearly impossible to tackle in space with his low center of gravity and elite contact balance. Skattebo might face NFL durability concerns with his smaller frame. But he’s also a walking highlight reel.

5. Ollie Gordon

School: Oklahoma State

Size: 6-1, 226

Career stats: 537 carries for 2,920 yards/36 rushing touchdowns and 80 catches for 585 yards/four receiving touchdowns.

Draft projection: Fifth round

Bottom line: Gordon won the Doak Walker Award two years ago when he ran for 1,732 yards and 21 touchdowns. But his production dropped significantly last season. Gordon can easily break tackles with his high motor and big frame. He could be a late-round steal if he recaptures the 2023 spark that led to so much production.
