Denver Broncos draft preview: 5 potential wide receiver targets

Matthew Golden, Emeka Egbuka and Luther Burden top list

The Broncos are nearing the NFL draft on April 24-26 with roster needs at several positions.

The team currently holds seven picks: No. 20 (1st), No. 51 (2nd), No. 85 (3rd), No. 122 (4th), No. 191 (6th), No. 197 (6th) and No. 208 (6th).

The Denver Gazette takes an inside look at five potential wide receiver targets:

1. Matthew Golden

School: Texas

Size: 5-foot-11, 191 pounds

Career stats: 134 catches for 1,975 yards and nine receiving touchdowns

Draft projection: First round

Bottom line: Speed is a requirement to keep pace in a high-flying AFC West. Golden certainly checks that box. His 40-yard dash time at the NFL combine (4.29 seconds) ranked fastest among wide receivers. The University of Houston transfer showcased incredible body control and athleticism to make highlight reel catches last season for the Longhorns.

2. Emeka Egbuka

School: Ohio State

Size: 6-1, 202

Career stats: 205 catches for 2,868 yards/24 receiving touchdowns and 24 carries for 145 yards/two rushing touchdowns

Draft projection: First round

Bottom line: Egbuka was a team captain for the Buckeyes’ national championship team. The primary slot receiver is a route technician capable of shedding defenders in open space. He might lack over-the-top speed. But his impressive catch radius, sure hands, and veteran savvy would all be welcomed in Sean Payton’s offense.

3. Luther Burden III

School: Missouri

Size: 6-0, 206

Career stats: 192 catches for 2,263 yards/21 receiving touchdowns and 34 carries for 234 yards/four rushing touchdowns.

Draft projection: Second round

Bottom line: Burden is a yards-after-catch monster feasting on short routes for long distances over three seasons in the SEC. His breakaway speed was also utilized in the running game. He’ll need to diversify his route tree to succeed in the NFL. Burden has all the tools to make it happen as a former five-star high school recruit from Illinois.

4. Tory Horton

School: Colorado State

Size: 6-3, 196

Career stats: 265 catches for 3,615 yards/27 receiving touchdowns and three punt return touchdowns

Draft projection: Fourth round

Bottom line: The Rams produced three NFL wide receiver draft picks since 2016. Horton will be the fourth. The Nevada transfer went over 1,000 yards receiving in back-to-back years with 16 touchdowns. His 2024 season was cut short due to injury. The two-time CSU team captain might be a late-round steal if he bounces back from knee surgery.

5. Tez Johnson

School: Oregon

Size: 5-10, 154

Career stats: 310 catches for 3,889 yards and 28 receiving touchdowns

Draft projection: Fifth round

Bottom line: Call it a family reunion. The family of quarterback Bo Nix adopted Johnson in high school and followed Nix from Troy to Oregon. They hooked up for plenty of big plays with the Ducks. Johnson needs to bulk up his smaller frame to eliminate durability concerns. But reuniting with Nix in Denver would be a cool storyline.
