Thornton police arrest 18-year-old for attempting to abduct middle school girl
Thornton Police Department officers arrested an 18-year-old man in an alleged attempt to abduct a middle school girl on Monday.
Steven Houseman was booked on suspicion of second-degree kidnapping, second-degree assault, false imprisonment and criminal attempted sexual assault for allegedly trying to abduct a 15-year-old girl from Thornton Middle school on Monday, according to a news release from TPD.
Houseman was taken into custody by police on the property of Thornton High School, according the release. Thornton middle and high schools sit directly across Washington Street from one another.
“I would like to thank the brave members of our community who, at our request, came forward with information that helped lead to the arrest of Housman,” said Interim Chief Greg Reeves in the release. “I also want to acknowledge the incredible investigative work done by our school resource officers and detectives who worked diligently in identifying and arresting Housman in a very short amount of time.”
The incident began at about 11:20 a.m. Monday, when Houseman allegedly tried to grab the girl as she was walking near the school, according to Thornton police. She resisted, and he fled the area.
Officers were notified of what happened just before 4 p.m. that day. They then found surveillance footage of the incident, and, at 11:19 a.m. Tuesday, announced that they had arrested a suspect.
