Denver families facing food insecurity can text ‘MEAL’ for help
For many children, the end of the school year can mean fewer opportunities to access free or reduced-cost school lunches.
Lantern, a Denver-based nonprofit, is hoping to fill that gap by placing knowledge of local and federal food assistance programs at the fingertips of parents and other caregivers.
By texting “MEAL” to 274448, parents and caregivers will receive weekly text messages from Lantern with links to resources like WIC and SNAP, as well as local resources based on the family’s zip code — including nearby summer food distribution sites.
While there are many programs designed to help families get access to the food they need, many do not participate, according to the organization’s website. Families are often unaware of the programs, don’t know if they’re eligible, or are concerned about stigmatization.
“A consistent and balanced diet helps children’s brains and bodies grow up strong,” said Jodie Fishman, chief content officer for Lantern. “But healthy food can be expensive. So far, 75% of respondents to our surveys report that MEAL messages have helped reduce their food insecurity.”
MEAL text messages are free and are offered in English, Spanish, and Arabic.
