Denver weather: Sunshine returns Friday and over the weekend ahead of prolonged stormy period

Sunny, drying out and warmer weather over the next three days for Denver leads into a stormy second week of May with rain and mountain snow possible for about four to five days.

Denver and metro area residents can expect sunny skies Friday, with a high near 64, according to the National Weather Service in Boulder. Today will also offer calm winds becoming north northeast between 5 to 8 mph in the afternoon.

Tonight it’ll be mostly clear, with a low around 42. East northeast winds to blow between 6 to 8 mph become south southwest after midnight.

“The chance of showers and thunderstorms will start to increase late Sunday, but most of those will be confined to the mountains,” the NWS said. “More numerous showers and a few thunderstorms can be expected Monday afternoon through Tuesday night as a slow moving spring storm system moves across the region. One or two strong or even severe storms will be possible over the plains.”

Accumulating snow is likely for the mountains and higher foothills for Monday night through Tuesday night, with potential travel impacts mainly above 8,000 feet.

Here’s the 4-day forecast from the National Weather Service.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 76. Light and variable wind becoming east 5 to 8 mph in the afternoon.

Sunday: A 20% chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Mostly sunny, with a high near 76. Breezy, with a south southwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming south southeast 12 to 17 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 30 mph.

Monday: A chance of showers, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after noon. High near 65. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Tuesday: Showers, with thunderstorms also possible after noon. Cloudy, with a high near 50.
