Arapahoe County commissioner appointed to state human services board

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis appointed an Arapahoe County commissioner to the State Board of Human Services, which oversees the state’s Department of Human Services, according to a news release from the county.

Polis appointed Arapahoe County Commissioner Jeff Baker, who has decades of experience working for the county, with some of those years of experience dedicated to human services.

Baker said he is honored to serve in the “vital role.”

“My commitment is to ensure exceptional, compassionate support for those who rely on human services across our state,” he said in the release.

The State Board of Human Services is made up of nine appointed members who establish rules and policies for the Colorado Department of Human Services. The board also oversees any rules and programs administered by the department.

Of the nine board members, three are required to be currently serving county commissioners. The other members have to include a person with a disability and a family member or member of an advocacy group for people with disabilities.

The Colorado Department of Human Services connects people with assistance, resources and support to “improve the safety, independence and wellbeing of Coloradans,” according to the department’s website.

Commissioner Baker has served as a county commissioner since January 2017 after working for the county for more than 20 years, according to the release. Five of his 20 years were spend working for Arapahoe County Human Services. Another 13 were spend with Facilities and Fleet Management. Baker also worked as a crime scene investigator for the Aurora Police Department for five years.

Prior to working for Arapahoe County, Baker served in the United States Army as a military police officer and criminal investigation special agent focused on crimes against children. He has a master’s degree in public administration from the University of Colorado.

Other commissioner members of the board include Larimer County Commissioner John Kefalas and Summit County Commissioner Tamara Pogue.
