Lakewood residents said they repeatedly reported problems with home before weekend fires

"It was complete chaos"

West Metro Fire Rescue responded to a home on fire in Lakewood on Saturday evening — a property that neighbors said they have been complaining about to authorities for months.

A day later, the fire department responded to another fire at the same home.

Residents said they repeatedly raised concerns with Lakewood officials about the house, where neighbors claimed they saw all kinds of problems since September.

“We hear gunshots constantly. We have videos of them going to the bathroom in the front of their yard. They are smoking drugs in their front yard,” Lindsay Driver, a nearby resident, said.

The home, just a few feet from Jefferson County Open School, has two RVs in the front yard, a large pile of objects, multiple cars and bicycles.

The fire began around 8:30 p.m. Saturday night in a back garage that had been converted into a living space, according to a social media post by West Metro Fire Rescue. No one was injured during the fire and it was extinguished around 10 p.m. The nearby home, on the same property, suffered some damage from the heat, the fire department said.

Multiple commenters on Reddit, NextDoor and Facebook claimed that a shed behind the garage exploded before the fire began. West Metro Fire Rescue declined to comment on the cause of the fire until after its investigation.

“The explosion completely rocked my house,” Driver said.

“We moved in thinking this area would develop and get better. It’s getting worse. It’s scaring me,” she added.

Around 1:30 a.m. on Monday morning, the fire department returned to the garage to extinguish another fire. The cause of that fire is also still under investigation, authorities said. A suspect was arrested on suspicion of arson, according to the Lakewood Police Department.

“I’ve never been one to be a cop-caller, but I just can’t anymore. It’s constant,” another nearby resident told The Denver Gazette. The resident asked to remain anonymous, fearing for her safety. “There’re shotguns, there’re handguns.”

“It just kept getting worse. It was complete chaos,” the neighbor said of the fire.

The resident told The Denver Gazette that she has reported the home to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, Lakewood Police Department and the city of Lakewood around six times to each agency since September.

She claimed that the DEA never responded. Lakewood police visited the area a few times but had not done anything substantial regarding complaints, she said. The city’s code enforcement department closed her case, she added.

Driver, the other neighbor, also said she hasn’t heard back from the city’s code enforcement unit, while the police department told her there’s nothing they can do because some of the people are tenants.

“Why isn’t it taped off?” Driver asked of the garage. “Isn’t there hazardous material? I don’t understand.”

“There have been many calls to or responses from our code enforcement officers concerning this unit,” said John Romero, public information officer with the Lakewood Police Department. “We are communicating with our building inspectors to have them post the buildings as inhabitable, and they can then start the process to legally condemn the property, due to the fires over the weekend.”

The resident who spoke on condition of anonymity said the problems started on Sept. 2, claiming a shooting in front of the home took place. The RVs and trash then started to pile up after, growing until the fire Saturday, she said.

She also claimed her child stepped on drug materials.

“My child stepped on a burnt foil that had burn marks all over it,” she said. “That was the pinnacle point.”

“I’m so scared to go outside. I’m doing everything they have told me to do. I’m being vigilant. I’ve been consistent with reporting,” she added. “I feel absolutely hopeless. I feel like no one will listen to me until someone dies. Is it me that dies? Is it my child that dies?”

Romero, of the Lakewood Police Department, responded: “Lakewood PD is aware of the issues and is working in the area to provide frequent extra patrols and strict enforcement.”

The Denver Gazette contacted the property owner, but he declined to comment on the incident.

On Feb. 25, Lakewood police reported an arrest of suspects near West 10th Avenue and Ammons Street — the exact corner the property is on.

It’s unknown whether the arrests were connected to the property.

“Patience pays off for our agents when following a suspected drug dealer,” the department said in a social media post, stating that a suspect had fled the area on an electric scooter after an attempted arrest. “When agents caught the suspect they found suspected fentanyl and a handgun with the serial number scratched off.”
