Aurora man to serve 14 years in prison for Parker hit-and-run

A Douglas County judge on Monday sentenced an Aurora man to 14 years in prison for a fatal hit-and-run in Parker from two years ago.

Tory Conyers, 46, was convicted of multiple felony charges, including vehicular homicide, for a fatal crash that occurred while he was fleeing from police on Aug. 21, 2023, according to a news release from the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office.

After stealing a cart full of merchandise from a Wal-Mart, Conyers fled as police tried to stop his vehicle, the release said.

Authorities said Conyers ran a red light at the corner of Parker Road and Lincoln Avenue, where he struck and killed 51-year-old pedestrian Jossy Fernando Pinto.

He originally faced up to 18 years in prison.

“Tory Conyers chose to spend his day stealing from local businesses, then fled law enforcement before tragically striking and killing an innocent man,” said Jon Steinberg, deputy district attorney with the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office, in the release.

“His reckless actions ended with him fleeing the scene, but justice was served in his conviction,” Steinberg said.

District Attorney George Brauchler blamed Colorado’s sentencing laws.

“Colorado’s weak laws are incompatible with these aggravated facts. Folks should know this killer is likely to leave prison in less than three years,” Brauchler said in the release.

Meanwhile, during his testimony on Monday, Conyers emotionally asked for forgiveness from Pinto’s family.

“I don’t make any excuses,” Conyers said. “The blame is strictly on me and I made poor decisions.”

After his testimony, 23rd Judicial District Judge Elizabeth Volz read Conyers his charges and sentenced him to 14 years in prison with 600 days of credit for time served while awaiting sentencing.
