Denver police arrest suspect in four-victim LoDo shooting

Denver Police Department officers arrested a man wanted in connection with a Lower Downtown (LoDo) shooting near Coors Field that sent four to the hospital in early May.

Carlos Lujan, 25, was arrested by police on suspicion of four counts of attempted first-degree murder for the shooting that occurred in the area of 19th and Market Streets Sunday May 4, according to a news release from the Denver Police Department. An adult female and three adult males were found to have sustained gunshot wounds. All are expected to survive.

The situation arose when a man in a plaid-colored shirt — later identified as Lujan — instigated a fight between two groups of people celebrating Cinco de Mayo inside of El Patio, a bar at 1949 Market St., according to the arrest affidavit provided by Denver police. The parties were then separated but met back up on the main level of the establishment where they began fighting again.

El Patio bar officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment on this story.

After heading outside the bar, the fight broke out again, spilling into the street and sidewalks of the 1900 block on Market Street, according to the affidavit. After several minutes, the groups separated and Lujan made his way to his vehicle that was parked in the 1800 block of Market Street.

Lujan was then caught on surveillance standing on the southeast corner of the 19th Street and Market Street intersection with a handgun in his right hand, according to the affidavit. He then raised the gun and fired multiple rounds, hitting four people on the northwest corner of the intersection, before entering the driver’s seat of a black Dodge Durango.

Two others, a man and a woman, got in the Durango with Lujan, which then left the area and was last seen driving westbound on 20th Street from Market Street, according to the affidavit. After speaking with witnesses on the scene, officers utilized surveillance footage to find a photo of the Durango’s plate, which they found was registered to Lujan.

All four victims had left El Patio after the fight before being shot, according to the affidavit. Three, two men and one woman, were found at the scene with gunshot wounds, according to the release. The fourth, another man, also sustained a gunshot wound and transported himself to the hospital.

While in the hospital, they told detectives that none of them had interacted with Lujan before that night, though they were able to identify him based on his Facebook profile photo.

The final determination of charges will be made by the Denver District Attorney’s Office.
