Chilling video captures large grizzly following hiker down trail at national park

A close-up encounter with a grizzly was recently captured on camera by a hiker in Canada’s Banff National Park. While Colorado isn’t home to the grizzly bear species, the clip is still sure to send chills down the spines of Centennial State viewers.

The 15-second clip appears to show a large bear following a hiker down the trail at a distance of about 20 feet. Posted a week ago, the clip has been viewed more than 34 million times on TikTok, alone.

In the original post, the hiker said the bear followed him for about five minutes before stopping at a nearby spring. The hiker posted a follow-up video with a little more detail, as well.

Local news reports that there are about 65 grizzly bears roaming Banff National Park. Grizzly bears have a reputation for being more aggressive in encounters with humans compared to black bears, which are native to Colorado. It’s estimated that about two to three people are killed by grizzlies each year in North America, with around 30 to 40 non-fatal attacks occurring, as well.

Coloradans who spot a black bear in the wild should keep their distance, heading in the opposite direction while maintaining sight of the bear until it’s far away. Making oneself look large can also be a good strategy. It’s never a bad idea to have a can of bear spray, too, though with Colorado’s black bears, this is often not needed. Black bears tend to spook fairly easily compared to grizzlies, commonly said to be more scared of humans than we are of them.
