air crash

Two people were reported onboard a twin-engine airplane that crashed in Broomfield Saturday morning.

The crash, which occurred just after 10 a.m. at the Boulder County Open Space field near the intersection of Brainard Drive and Midway Boulevard, just north of Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport, came after the the pilot had called Air Traffic Control and reported an issue with the door being open, according to a statement from the airport and a spokesperson from North Metro Fire Rescue, who initially responded to the scene.

Two people were onboard the plane when it crashed short of the airport’s runway as it was trying to land, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office said in an afternoon news release that the number of people aboard was unconfirmed.

The crash initially resulted in a small grass fire that was quickly extinguished by North Metro Fire Rescue, the department confirmed Saturday morning. Once the fire was put out, the department quickly determined that there were no survivors.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are responding to the incident to the conduct an investigation into the crash, which is standard procedure, the department said. Additionally, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office is on the scene to alert people in the open space to avoid the area while the investigation is ongoing.

The sheriff’s office will next work on identifying the victims and alert their next of kin, the department said. As of now, there have been no reported injuries from people who were on the ground when the plane crashed.
