Centennial’s Steven Goldy wins Denver’s Colfax Marathon in his first marathon race

Colorado’s own Steven Goldy crossed the finish line as champion of the 19th Denver Colfax Marathon on Sunday morning.

And many wouldn’t believe it was actually the 27-year-old’s first time running in a marathon race.

“It was a great time. Fun weather out there. It’s always fun to run the hometown course,” Goldy told The Denver Gazette’s news partner 9News immediately after running a 2:24.20 in his first 26.2-mile race.

That’s a pace of 5 minutes and 30 seconds a mile.

“I wanted to mix it up, see what I can do and go win it,” Goldy, who is currently chasing his Ph.D. at Colorado School of Mines, said.

“It’s good to bring home the win and it was a great crowd,” he added.

Over 25,000 runners, among the half-marathon and marathon relays Sunday, ran over 244,000 miles – enough combined to circle the earth 10 times.

The race course featured a tour of historic downtown Denver including Colfax Avenue, a run-through of Empower Field at Mile High Stadium, a firehouse, the South Platte River trail and thousands of energetic spectators either cheering or holding signs of encouragement.

“This race weekend has become an amazing community tradition and the energy out here is unmatched,” Andrea Dowdy, CEO of the Denver Colfax Marathon, said in a statement.

“We’re celebrating every runner that crossed the finish line today,” she said. “This event really brings out the best runners in our state and we’re so excited to see local Colorado runners break the course records in some of our big races.”

All podium winners of the 19th annual Denver Colfax Marathon received monetary prizes on behalf of the marathon and its sponsors.
