The Boulder County Coroners office identified the individuals aboard a twin-engine airplane that crashed in Broomfield May 17, killing both.
Eugene Knutson, 80, and 74-year-old James Gelaude were the two who died in the aircraft mishap, according to a release the coroner.
The crash occurred just after 10 a.m. Saturday at the Boulder County Open Space field. The site, just north of Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport, was near the intersection of Brainard Drive and Midway Boulevard.
One of the pilots called Air Traffic Control to report an issue with the plane’s door being open, according to a statement from the airport and a spokesperson from North Metro Fire Rescue, who initially responded to the scene.
The crash caused a small grass fire, which was extinguished by North Metro Fire Rescue. After the fire was put out, the department determined that Knutson and Gelaude had not survived.
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are still conducting an investigation looking into the crash. There are no reported injuries from those on the ground at the time of the crash.
