Colorado men’s golf misses cut at NCAA finals

The Colorado men’s golf team did not get the Sunday magic it was looking for.

The Buffs struggled for the second straight day at the Omni La Costa-North Course in Carlsbad, Calif., and missed the cut at the NCAA Division I Championship. After shooting a 10-over team score Saturday, the Buffs were unable to get it going Sunday and had a 21-over par day to finish the three-day event at 32-over.

Colorado needed to finish in the top 15 to continue stroke play on Monday.

No Colorado golfer was able to break par on Sunday. Hunter Swanson had the Buffs’ best round with a 1-over 73. Justin Biwer, who was in the top 10 after day one, finished with an 82.

It was a disappointing end to an outstanding season for the No. 29 ranked Buffs, who played in the NCAA finals for the second time in three years. Colorado was one of five Big 12 schools to advance to the championship and the Buffs finished third in the tough Northwest Regional to punch their ticket this season.

On Saturday, Dylan McDermott and Biwer were named to the Golf Coaches Association of America PING-All-West team. It’s the third time CU has had multiple players named for the same year since its creation in 2002; in 2007-08, Michael Baird, Luke Symons and Derek Tolan were named to the team, and for 2008-09, Tolan and Patrick Grady made it.

“Congratulations to Justin and Dylan on being named All-Region by the GCAA,” Edwards said. “They both have had tremendous seasons, two of the best in our long history, and this certainly recognizes that.”
