House Republican claims Senate critics of ‘big, beautiful bill’ are ‘shortsighted’

Rep. Dan Meuser (R-PA) defended President Donald Trump’s reconciliation legislation on Tuesday by pointing to other savings the administration has brought about.

Last week, the House of Representatives passed the “big, beautiful bill.” As the legislation heads to the Senate for amendments and a vote, Republican senators criticize it on issues including the deficit, Medicaid changes, and energy credits.

“I also feel, in all due respect, that they’re being a little short-sighted, also missing the forest for the trees. Look, this is a crucial step, but that’s all it is. A step, a very significant step, to strengthen our economy, to save $1.6 trillion and get over the fearmongering that has been created by the Democrats,” Meuser said of the critics on Fox Business’s Mornings with Maria. “They’re not appreciating that this is just beginning. This is not the end. We could have more bills. We’re going to have more savings.”

“We’ve got to pass it. There’s so much pro-growth in here, taxes, energy, border, military,” Meuser said. “Without the bill, clearly, we won’t receive such growth opportunities.”

This comes after House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) advised the Senate to “fine-tune this product as little as possible.”

STEPHEN MILLER PROMISES ‘REVENUE BOOM’ WILL FOLLOW ‘BIGGEST AND BOLDEST’ TAX CUTS

However, Trump has recommended Senate Republicans do the opposite, saying, “I want the Senate and the senators to make the changes they want.”

Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) has raised concerns about the bill, arguing it is fiscally irresponsible. He said that while he supports elements of the bill, such as extending Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, he is worried that some provisions would “explode the deficit.”
