Broncos QB Bo Nix building chemistry with TE Evan Engram: ‘See what makes him tick’

ENGLEWOOD — Quarterback Bo Nix is getting to know the new buzz-worthy tight end at Broncos Park.

Evan Engram is in the building.

“He’s been here since he was signed,” Nix said on Thursday following organized team activities Thursday. “Getting ready and preparing. That’s been fun to see.”

The Broncos signed Engram, 30, in free agency entering his ninth NFL season. His best statistical years were in 2020 (Giants) and 2023 (Jaguars) with Pro Bowl selections. Engram has 496 career receptions for 4,922 yards and 25 touchdowns. He missed eight games last season with injuries (hamstring/shoulder).

Denver is hopeful Engram bounces back at a major position of need.

In 2023, during Sean Payton’s first season as head coach, tight ends combined for 39 catches for 362 yards and four touchdowns. In 2024, the position totaled 51 receptions for 483 yards and five touchdowns. Denver waived third-round tight end Greg Dulcich in November of last season.

Broncos second-year Bo Nix downplays lofty expecations, saying there is 'a lot to prove'

Engram has tools at 6-foot-3 and 240 pounds to give Nix a reliable option in key situations.

“I think (Engram) helps a lot depending on the coverages you’re getting,” Payton said on Thursday. “Your third-down and your red-zone game plans, I think it really helps.”

The Broncos wrapped up OTAs this week as the first real step for Nix and Engram to build chemistry.

“It starts by getting to know him. See what makes him tick, what makes him go, and what his passions are,” Nix said. “It’s very clear from the beginning that he’s all about football and he’s all about taking care of himself.”

Nix broke out last season as a Broncos rookie throwing for 3,775 yards with a 66.3 completion percentage and 29 passing touchdowns (12 interceptions). It’s a big reason why the over/under for Broncos wins next season is set at 9.5. Some of that hype reflects big expectations for the Nix-Engram connection.

One step at a time.

“We just started working on the field,” Nix said. “Early on in OTAs, you get to come out here and throw routes and just see what he’s like. See what kind of routes he runs and see what he’s thinking. We talk a lot. He’s always asking me about certain things. When you get him out to practice, it’s just seeing how he reacts. I’m excited to include him and add him to what we already have.

“I think it’ll be good for us.”
