New Nuggets coach David Adelman will get the chance to pick his coaching staff.

According to a report from senior NBA insider Chris Haynes, the team will not renew the contracts of assistant coaches Ryan Saunders, Popeye Jones, Charles Klask, and Stephen Graham. Saunders served as Denver’s defensive coordinator in recent seasons, while Adelman ran Denver’s offense. Adelman wasn’t sure he would keep his staff structured the same way.

“There’s other people doing it a different way across the league,” Adelman said at his introductory press conference.

“That’s for me to sit down, realize where my comfort zone is with that and then go from there to make sure we put the right people in place to give these guys the best chance possible to be successful.”

The Nuggets finished last season 21st in defensive rating. Klask joined the Nuggets in 2018, while Jones joined Malone’s staff in 2021. Graham was part of Denver’s player-development staff.

All four were part of Michael Malone’s coaching staff that won the 2023 NBA title. Malone was let go with three games left in the regular season before Adelman took over. Adelman, who went 3-0 in the regular season and 7-7 in the playoffs, was officially announced as head coach on Wednesday.

Ryan Bowen, John Beckett, Ognjen Stojakovic and Elvis Valcarcel were the only other assistant coaches on last season’s staff.
