1 person dead in police shooting outside of A Precious Child in Broomfield

A person died in a shooting involving the police outside a nonprofit serving children in Broomfield, authorities announced on Thursday.
In a post on X, the police said no officers were injured. Authorities did not elaborate.
A Precious Child is a nonprofit that serves children, such as by providing clothing, diapers and school supplies.
Authorities initially placed the nonprofit’s building, in the 7000 block of W. 118th Ave, in “secure mode” due to a “threat outside” on Thursday morning. When a business or school is placed in “secure mode,” external access is restricted for the safety of those inside, the police explained.
Surrounding buildings were also asked to secure their doors, and parents picking up their children were redirected to 119th Place and Reed Street.
Authorities said officers were negotiating with a man in the parking lot who might have a gun. A crisis negotiations team spoke with the man before the shooting, but it is unclear if he was the one who died.
118th Avenue remains closed at Main Street.
