Charles Fazzino, official artist for Super Bowl and MLB’s All-Star Game, hosts Denver exhibit

World-renowned artist Charles Fazzino has enjoyed a long relationship with Colorado.

“I’ve gotten to a point where I could draw Denver with my eyes closed,” Fazzino said.

A New York City-based artist known for his ‘3D’ work, Fazzino has an exhibition at Fascination St. Fine Art in the Cherry Creek neighborhood Friday and Saturday.

Sports fanatics may not be familiar with the name, but they’ve likely seen Fazzino’s work. The official artist of the Super Bowl, Fazzino is recognized as the most popular ‘3D’ artist in the world, having created artwork for Major League Baseball’s All-Star games and Olympic Games.

His catalog includes work for the Broncos’ victory in Super Bowl 50, MLB’s All-Star Game at Coors Field in 2021, even the Warrior Games hosted in Colorado Springs in 2013.

“New York City tends to be the most famous popular city in terms of artwork. Paris is No. 2, San Francisco No. 3,” Fazzino told The Denver Gazette. “But Denver’s up there because it’s such a beautiful place. It’s a great place to draw because of the backdrop of the mountains. It’s unique for artwork.”

As a kid growing up in the Bronx, Fazzino fell in love with pop-up books and later attended visual arts school. “I couldn’t find a job,” he said, until showing his work at an arts festival in Greenwich Village’s Washington Square Park in 1981. His three-dimensional work then took off.

Fazzino has been commissioned to draw Super Bowl art since the 2001 game between the Giants and Ravens at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla. He also draws program covers for the Super Bowl, including a catchy Bay Area look for the Broncos’ appearance in Super Bowl 50.

“I’ll pick a Denver scene and leave out nothing — hotels I’ve stayed in, restaurants I’ve eaten in, places I’ve visited in Denver. You’ll see the Four Seasons downtown, the (Hotel) Clio in Cherry Creek, the Brown Palace. And then you center the stadium around the attractions,” he said.

“Baseball fans are different. They want to see something of their city that is authentic, that is geographically correct and (that) the stadium looks correct. And they want the experience to be realistic for them. Denver makes for a great city for this kind of artwork.”
