Democratic AG candidate Hetal Doshi tops $265K in donations in Colorado campaign’s first day

Hetal Doshi announcement video

Colorado attorney general candidate Hetal Doshi raised more than $265,000 in the 24 hours after the Democrat launched her campaign on Thursday, the first-time candidate’s campaign told Colorado Politics, setting a new record for the most money raised by a state-level candidate in a single day.

Doshi, a first-generation Indian American and the former top anti-trust litigator at the U.S. Department of Justice, surpassed recently set high-dollar marks set by two of her primary opponents, Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold and nationally prominent consumer rights attorney David Seligman, in their first days as candidates.

According to their campaigns, Seligman brought in more than $250,000 after announcing on May 13, beating the previous record $185,000 raised by Griswold after she got in the race on April 8.

A spokesman for Doshi said her campaign received contributions from more than 400 donors in the 24 hours after her announcement. Additionally, by Friday morning, a Doshi campaign video had been viewed more than 55,000 times.

Boulder District Attorney Michael Dougherty and former state House Speaker Crisanta Duran are the two other Democrats seeking the nomination to take over after next year’s election from term-limited Democratic Attorney General Phil Weiser, who is running for governor. So far, only one Republican, political newcomer Connor Pennington, has announced a run for the office.

“Motivated by my own personal story, I’ve spent my career in the trenches as a law enforcer fighting the fights that matter for working families like my own,” Doshi said in a statement.

“I am humbled and inspired to have earned this outpouring of support from communities and people who see themselves in my story and experience,” she added. “Together, we will win the fight to protect the rights, freedom, and economic opportunity of every Coloradan so that we can all have a shot at the American Dream.”

Doshi said in her announcement video that her experience holding “the world’s most powerful billionaires and corporations” accountable as a federal prosecutor in Colorado and at the Justice Department in Washington has prepared her to “stand between the people of Colorado and Donald Trump’s all out attack on the rule of law.”

“Because right now, the rule of law is under attack by Donald Trump and politicians who have abandoned patriotism for power,” she said, adding that, “for decades, I’ve used the rule of law to hold bullies accountable when they hurt Americans in boardrooms, in government and everywhere else.”

Doshi endorser Terrance Carroll, a former Colorado House speaker, said her experience sets her apart from the field.

“Colorado needs an attorney general who will use every tool at their disposal to fight for workers, consumers and small businesses — and Hetal has the track record to deliver,” Carroll said in a statement released by her campaign.

Said former Colorado Solicitor General Eric Olson, another Doshi endorser: “Hetal has spent her career leveling the playing field by bringing some of the most consequential lawsuits in modern history. She’s not afraid of a tough fight and has a proven record of winning for Colorado families.”

Like Doshi, Griswold and Seligman entered the race after the end of the year’s first quarter, so their initial campaign finance reports aren’t due until July 15. According to their filings, Dougherty raised $155,406, including $390 in in-kind contributions, from Feb. 24 through last day of March, and Duran took in $36,538 from Feb. 27 through the end of the quarter.

It’s just over a year until Colorado voters can begin casting ballots in next year’s primary election, which is set for June 30, 2026.
