‘No Kings’ Trump protest in Colorado to go on despite objections from Parker officials

Parker Days Festival

Officials in the Town of Parker attempted to reschedule an anti-President Donald Trump protest planned for Saturday, arguing the protest could negatively impact authoritative resources during the popular Parker Days festival.

Protest organizers appear they aren’t going to budge on the town’s offer to reschedule the protest, according to town officials, despite its attempts to thwart it.

Parker’s “No Kings Day” protest joins a nationwide movement condemning Trump and his actions as president. Several other large protests are set in the metro Denver region Saturday, including another one in Castle Rock. Parker’s protest location is undisclosed and will occur along municipal sidewalks, according to the Parker No Kings invite.

“We’ve watched as they’ve cracked down on free speech, detained people for their political views, threatened to deport American citizens, and defied the courts,” No Kings organizers said in its invite for the Parker protest.

Parker officials, however, fear additional foot traffic would negatively impact police and first responder resources during Parker Days, which lasts from Thursday to Sunday.

“Due to the nature and size of the festival, much of town staffing and resources, including those of the Parker Police Department, are allocated to managing Parker Days and ensuring the safety of all participants and attendees,” Andy Anderson, a town spokesperson, said in a statement.

“This significantly limits the remaining resources available to service the rest of the Town,” Anderson said.

Saturday’s Parker protest is planned for 10 a.m. to noon, coinciding with Parker Days festivities, one of the most popular festivals in the metro Denver region. Roughly 350,000 people anticipate to take part in the four-day downtown Parker festival, according to the Parker Chamber of Commerce.

A Parker Police Department spokesperson told The Denver Gazette police won’t get involved as long as protests remain peaceful, noting many officers will already be patrolling around Parker Days and the nearby area.

“In this case, we don’t have any officers that can really work off duties because they’re all at Parker Days,” the Parker Police Department spokesperson told The Denver Gazette.

“There still will be officers out and about,” the police spokesperson added, “but they’re not dedicated to the people that choose to stand on the side of the road.”

Town of Parker officials noted they spoke with organizers last week, laying out its concerns for a large demonstration taking place at the same time near Parker Days.

“The organizer agreed to cancel the event this weekend,” Anderson said, adding officials offered to approve a rescheduled event.

“The Town was disappointed to hear that the event is going forward,” Anderson said, “despite the organizer expressing an interest in finding an alternate date for the event.”

The Parker and Castle Rock protests occur within the Republican-dominated Douglas County, which is currently attempting to gain home rule county status for more local control.

Protest organizers are anticipating over 1,000 people participating in the downtown Castle Rock protest, which begins at 2:30 p.m. at the Douglas County Fairgrounds.

In a statement, Castle Rock No Kings protest organizers said Douglas County is “a bastion of Republican ideals.”

Local protests come off the heels of nationwide anti-Trump and anti-ICE raid protests, most notably following protests-turned-clashes in Los Angeles.

In Denver on Tuesday, authorities arrested 18 people during downtown protests. Many were arrested for obstructing roadways, graffiti, two police officer assault arrests and interfering with police, according to the Denver Police Department.

However, for the town located 25 miles southeast of Denver, Parker officials said Saturday protests would impede the “ability to safety and properly respond to the routine matters within the community, as well as any incidents that may occur due to the number of people expected to attend.”
