Where the good news shines
Four University of Colorado golders — three men and one woman — had solid final rounds Saturday at the 110th Southwestern Amateur in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Brandon Knight closed with a 6-under par 66 on the 7,107-yard, par-72 Outlaw Course at Desert Mountain Golf Club, tied for the second-lowest score of the day as he finished in sole possession of third place. He tied the third-best performance by a Buffaloes player in the event, matching teammate Hunter Swanson’s effort there last year and Scott Petersen who claimed the title in Albuquerque in 1993. Current associate head coach Derek Tolan finished second in Las Vegas in 2006.
Incoming USC transfer Jackson Rivera closed strong with a 2-under 70 that inched him up into sixth place. Swanson rallied after struggling Friday (a 5-over 77) and went the other direction with a 5-under 67 — a bogey-free round — in tying for 20th.
Sophomore-to-be Parker Paxton had been in a tie for second through three rounds after a 9-under scorecard of 72-66-69—207, but he withdrew after Friday’s round to return home to Riverton, Wyo., to attend his grandfather’s funeral.
Colorado’s Carolyn Fuller tied her for 16th place at the Women’s Southwestern.
