Democrat Jena Griswold swamps primary rivals for Colorado attorney general, her internal poll shows

Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold holds an overwhelming lead over four Democratic opponents more than a year before the 2026 primary for attorney general, an internal poll released Monday by her campaign found.

Conducted by Democratic firm Global Strategy Group, the survey of likely Democratic primary voters shows that Griswold has nearly three times the support of all of her primary rivals combined, though just over four in 10 respondents said they were undecided.

In addition to Griswold, the Democrats running to succeed term-limited Democratic Attorney General Phil Weiser are Boulder District Attorney Michael Dougherty, former state House Speaker Crisanta Duran, consumer rights attorney and nonprofit head David Seligman and former top federal prosecutor Hetal Doshi. Weiser is running for governor in next year’s primary.

Griswold polled at 42% support, followed by Dougherty at 8%, Seligman at 4%, Duran at 2% and Doshi at 1%, with 42% undecided. When pressed by the pollster to make a selection, Griswold carried the undecided voters by about the same margin, with the others trailing in single digits.

“Jena Griswold holds a dominant position in the Attorney General primary because Democratic primary voters know her and like her, while her opponents have yet to register with the electorate in any meaningful way,” said Andrew Baumann, a partner at the national polling firm.

Griswold, who is serving her second and final term overseeing Colorado’s elections, was viewed favorably by 51% of those surveyed and unfavorably by just 15%, the poll found, for a name identification score of 66%.

By comparison, Gov. Jared Polis was viewed favorably by 79% of respondents and unfavorably by 19%. Polis, who is also term-limited, had near universal name identification, with 97% of the likely primary voters expressing an opinion about him.

Griswold’s campaign didn’t release favorability and name identification figures for the other attorney general primary candidates.

The race to take over for Weiser after next year’s election has heated up in recent months, with Griswold, Seligman and Doshi each setting new, single-day state fundraising records when they launched their respective campaigns. Only one Republican, political newcomer Connor Pennington, has so far filed to run for the office.

Global Strategy Group polled 600 likely Democratic primary voters from June 9-11, evenly split between live telephone interviews and text-to-web responses, Baumann said in a polling memo. The poll has a margin of error of 4%.

Colorado’s primary election is set for June 30, 2026.
