Motorists driving along Federal Boulevard in Littleton will encounter detours amid an anticipated 10-week closure along a portion of the busy corridor.
Beginning on Monday, Federal Boulevard will close between Belleview and Progress avenues for major culvert and stormwater system replacements, according to the city.
Construction workers must dig underneath the segment in order to address and replace the culverts, typically requiring a tedious process.
“The City of Littleton is prioritizing vital repairs and replacements to the city’s stormwater system, including several major culvert replacements,” officials said in a news release.
Plans include the removal of approximately 182 linear feet of metal pipe to be replaced with 257 feet of reinforced concrete pipe, according to the city.
“This follows a citywide evaluation of stormwater infrastructure showing that some of the system’s components are at the end of their usable life,” officials said.
Littleton’s Federal Boulevard corridor serves thousands of motorists per day traveling north to Denver. It is located west of Santa Fe Drive, which is bisected by Belleview Avenue.
Detour routes will be posted from Federal Boulevard to Belleview Avenue. Local access will remain to the Partner Colorado Credit Union and Foushee SalonSpa.
“In order to ensure public safety and prevent larger issues, some components must be replaced as soon as possible,” officials said of reconstruction. “Newly-replaced stormwater infrastructure is more durable, helping Littleton be well-positioned for the future.”
Littleton has faced tedious projects replacing city-owned culverts.
Two years ago, the city replaced a culvert beneath Jackass Hill Road. Another culvert took time to build underneath East Mineral Avenue. In the near future, city officials plan a replacement culvert below Broadway at Jamison Avenue.
Littleton will provide updates on its website as construction progresses.
