Human remains were found late Wednesday afternoon in an area near the Alpine Ridge Trail in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP), a park official said in an email statement Friday.
The area were the remains were found is near the Alpine Visitor Center, which is located along Trail Ridge Road.
According the National Park Service, park law enforcement rangers responded and are leading an ongoing investigation to uncover more details about the remains.
The Larimer County Coroner’s Office will confirm positive identification of the individual and release additional information when the next-of-kin is identified and notified, officials said.
The Alpine Ridge Trail is a 0.6-mile out-and-back trail that starts at the Alpine Visitor Center atop Trail Ridge Road. The trail is entirely above treeline and is considered a moderately challenging route, taking an average of 19 minutes to complete, according to AllTrails.com.
No further information is available at this time as park officials work with other law enforcement agencies to collect more details regarding the incident.
