News nuggets: Marriages, concerts and at-large city council members
Pride Marriage Marathon set for June 27
Denver’s popular Marriage Marathon event has been expanded and will now kick off the city’s annual Pride Weekend this year.
Couples are invited to tie the knot or renew their vows from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 27. Participants must begin the process at the Webb Municipal Building, at 201 W. Colfax Ave., to obtain a marriage license. Once a license has been issued, couples should proceed to the Denver Elections Division Building, at 200 W. 14th Ave., to meet with an officiant to get married.
No appointments are necessary.
“We’re thrilled to bring the Marriage Marathon to Pride weekend,” Denver Clerk & Recorder Paul López said. “This is so much more than a celebration — it’s a reaffirmation of our commitment to equality and to uphold every person’s right to marry whom they love. Love always wins.”
A $30 marriage license fee is required to finalize marriage applications before a ceremony can take place.
Free concerts slated for July 4
The Denver Municipal Band will host a series of free concerts in July. The Brass Quintet will perform at 11 a.m. July 4 at the Washington Park Boathouse at 701 S. Franklin St. The Concert Band will then perform a patriotic concert in the park at 7 p.m.
Music lovers may enjoy more of the Concert Band at 7 p.m. July 6 in Cheesman Park, 1599 E. 8th Ave. in Denver.
Meeting slated Tuesday to discuss City Council elections
Several Denver City Council members have proposed a change to the city’s charter regarding the election of its two at-large council members and are hosting a public meeting for residents interested in learning more.
Instead of voting for both at-large members on one ballot, Councilmembers Kevin Flynn, Darrell Watson, Stacie Gilmore, Amanda Sawyer and Flor Alvidrez suggest voters should choose them separately on two ballots — At-Large A and At-Large B.
The in-person public meeting will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. June 24 at the Carla Madison Recreation Center. 2401 E. Colfax Ave.
A copy of the draft bill is available online at the city’s website.
