Lakeside campground dubbed ‘best place to camp’ in America’s ‘Mountain Region’

Popular camping-related website The Dyrt has once again released their annual ‘Best Places to Camp Regional Awards,’ which focuses on highlighting top campsites in various regions around the country.

In total, 10 picks are selected in six different regions – central, midwest, mountain, northeast, pacific, and southeast. As might be expected, Colorado lands in the ‘Mountain Region,’ along with states like Utah, Arizona, Nevada, Montana, Wyoming, and New Mexico.

This year, Colorado landed two campgrounds on the ‘top 10’ list for the mountain region, including the first-place spot.

According to The Dyrt, the best place to camp in the mountain region is at Lost Lake Campground in Colorado’s Gunnison National Forest and near Paonia. The campsite features tent, RV, and equestrian sites, with campers claiming spots on a first-come, first-served basis.

Notably, the campground is lakeside with 18 campsites available. Due to weather in the area and its remote location, it only operates from mid-June through September. It’s $24 per night, find more info here.

Another Colorado camping spot also made the cut to be included, at the respectable third-place ranking. That campground was White Star Campground in the Pike-San Isabel National Forest and near the town of Twin Lakes. This campground is also quite a bit larger that the number one pick, with 67 sites spread around three different loops. There’s a ton of hiking in the area, which is part of White Star’s appeal.

Unlike Lost Lake, reservations can be made for spots at White Star. White Star typically operates from May through September, costing $30 per night. Read more about this campsite here.
